Excursion Reykjavik highlights tour at Reykjavik

Get to know the city of Reykjavík, past and present, on this highlight tour of this northernmost capital in the world, but Reykjavík also has the reputation of being one of the most modern, forward-thinking societies in Europe. The city gets 100% of its electricity and heat from renewable sources and is one of the greenest cities in the world.

Drive through Laugardalur valley where women used to go to wash clothes before modern times, walking about two miles one way to get to the warm water there. Today, the area is home to the city’s main sports and recreational area with an open-air geothermal swimming pool and the city’s botanical garden.

Drive to the Árbær Open Air Museum where you will visit old Reykjavík at the turn of the 20th century, the museum was founded to preserve old houses from the city and beyond.

The next stop will be Perlan, where the vantage point offers great views of the capital area and beyond. This glass dome on top of six district heating tanks is today a unique place with museum about the Wonders of Iceland, a Northern Lights show and an Ice Cave.

Before your next stop, will drive around, passing famous landmarks such as Hallgrímskirkja church, the largest church in Iceland and the city’s best-known landmark and the University of Iceland and campus.

The next stop is the National Museum of Iceland where you can find objects that provide insight into Icelandic cultural history - displays that encourage visitors to dwell on the past, present and future.

On the way back to the pier, take a scenic drive through the city center, past Harpa Concert Hall, and Höfði House, venue of a meeting in 1986 between President Reagan and General Secretary Gorbachev, which is considered to have been the beginning of the end of the Cold War.
