Málaga is not only the capital of the Costa del Sol, but also a cultural reference on a national and international level. Since opening in 2003, the Picasso museum has surpassed the most optimistic forecasts, enabling visitors to enjoy over two hundred major works by an artist considered to be the towering genius of 20th-century world painting.
Málaga
Depart the pier towards the city of Málaga, one of the oldest cities in the world, founded in the 8th century founded by the Phoenicians. Your first stop is Calle Larios, the main shopping street of Málaga.
Next, cross Constitution Square, then walk along Calle Granada to the Plaza de la Merced. Here, discover Picasso's birthplace and an exhibition about the famous artist, then proceed to the highlight of the tour, the Picasso Museum of Málaga, or 'Museo Picasso Málaga'.
Picasso Museum
The Picasso Museum is permanently housed in the Palacio de Buenavista, a 16th-century historical building that is adorned with the Andalusian architecture of the day, along with a unique blend of Renaissance and Mudejar elements. Museo Picasso Málaga was created in response to Pablo Picasso's own desire for his work to be present in the city where he was born on October 25, 1881. The museum was created thanks to Christine and Bernard Ruiz-Picasso, the artist's daughter-in-law and grandson, whose donations constitute the core of the collection. It was also made possible thanks to the efforts of the Junta de Andalucía, which coordinated the major project of setting up a museum devoted to the artist whose styles and techniques changed the course of modern art.
Bodega Patio de Beatas
Following your guided museum visit, proceed to the Bodega Patio de Beatas for 3 small tapas accompanied by one glass of wine.
Afterward, you may opt to return directly to the pier, or remain in the city for further exploration before taking the shuttle back to the pier.
