Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Visit Matsue Castle, one of only twelve original castles remaining in Japan and designated a National Treasure and explore a preserved samurai residence district near the outer moat.
Departing from the pier, board a comfortable coach for a scenic 50-minute journey toward Matsue, passing coastal scenery and the calm waters of the San’in region.
Matsue Castle
Your first stop is Matsue Castle, famed for its striking black exterior and status as one of Japan’s few original castles. You’ll explore the grounds and, for those able, ascend the main keep via steep wooden stairs to enjoy sweeping views over the city and lakes. Expect about 200 steps and gravel surfaces within the castle precincts.
Matsue Former Samurai Residence
A short transfer brings you to the Matsue Former Samurai Residence area, a preserved street near the castle’s outer moat. Step inside a traditional residence to glimpse Edo-period samurai life—tatami rooms, simple craftsmanship, and a tranquil garden—while your guide shares context on class, customs, and daily routines. Terrain is almost flat, with several small steps; restrooms are available.
Re-board the coach for the 50-minute drive back to the pier, reflecting on Matsue’s enduring samurai heritage.
