Excursion Hiking the caldeira of faial tour at Horta

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

From Horta, we travel along the town’s main street and make our way to the Espalamaca viewpoint before proceeding to the upper edge of Faial’s Caldeira, the island’s expansive central volcano. The crater, which is 400 meters deep, showcases remarkable endemic vegetation far below. A brief yet steep trail takes us up to Cabeço Gordo, the highest point of the crater, followed by a walk of approximately one mile along a narrow paved road. The path then transitions back to a more rugged trail, circling the crater and returning to the starting point. If the weather is favorable, stunning views stretch across the crater and over much of Faial’s lush pastures and woodlands.

Note

Please note: This tour is recommended for guests in good physical condition. This tour is not suitable for pregnant guests, guests with neck/back problems, guests with heart/respiratory conditions, or guests with limited mobility. Guests must be able to hike up inclines for a prolonged period of time, with few breaks. The hike has an approximate duration of 2.5 hours and covers about 6 km (4.5 miles). Guests are required to wear sturdy hiking boots and should bring protection against rain and sun, as well as bottled water. Temperatures at the Caldeira are often significantly cooler than at Horta Marina, so warm layers are recommended. The hiking route may be adjusted in case of rain, fog, or strong winds.
