Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
This thoughtfully curated culinary excursion brings together two distinctive experiences that define modern Danish gastronomy: an intimate, hands-on culinary workshop focused on sustainable, plant-forward cuisine, and a visit to Sol over Gudhjem, Denmark’s most renowned food festival. Set in the scenic landscapes of Bornholm, the day offers rare insight into how tradition, innovation, and local ingredients intersect—from forward-thinking kitchens shaping the future of food to a vibrant harbour town celebrating Nordic flavours at the highest level.
Scenic Drive from Rønne
Depart from Rønne and enjoy a scenic 30-minute drive through Bornholm’s gently rolling countryside. Along the way, your guide introduces the island’s landscape and food traditions as you travel toward The Living Kitchen, passing farmland, forests, and small villages that reflect Bornholm’s rural character.
Hands-On Culinary Workshop at The Living Kitchen
Arrive at The Living Kitchen, an innovative culinary studio dedicated to exploring the future of food through sustainability and health-conscious cooking. Since 2022, the kitchen has specialised in green proteins, demonstrating how legumes and plant-based ingredients can be transformed into refined, flavourful cuisine.
The three-hour workshop begins with an introduction to the studio’s philosophy, followed by a hands-on cooking session using locally sourced legumes. Together, you prepare a starter and five to six dishes, presented as an elegant buffet. The experience concludes with a shared seated meal, allowing time to enjoy the dishes in a relaxed setting. Guests receive a curated selection of recipes to take home.
Drive to Gudhjem
After the workshop, a 20-minute drive takes you across the island toward the east coast, offering glimpses of rocky landscapes and views of the Baltic Sea before arriving in the picturesque harbour town of Gudhjem.
Guided Introduction to Gudhjem
On arrival, enjoy a 30-minute guided walk through Gudhjem’s harbour and town centre. Your guide explains the layout of the town, highlights scenic viewpoints, and provides context for Sol over Gudhjem, helping you orient yourself before exploring independently.
Free Time at “Sol over Gudhjem” Festival
You then have approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes of free time to explore Sol over Gudhjem, Denmark’s most celebrated food festival. At the harbour stage, watch live cooking competitions where some of the country’s leading chefs prepare dishes using seasonal, local ingredients—an event closely followed by national media and widely regarded as a showcase of modern Nordic cuisine.
Surrounding the competition area, market stalls and small producers offer smoked fish, seafood, charcuterie, artisanal cheeses, baked goods, local preserves, chocolates, craft beer, cider, and specialty drinks. Guests are free to sample products, speak directly with producers, browse shops and galleries, or stroll along coastal paths overlooking the Baltic Sea.
Panoramic Return to Rønne
In the early evening, rejoin the coach for a 30-minute panoramic drive back to the pier in Rønne, passing coastal viewpoints and countryside landscapes that provide a relaxed and fitting conclusion to a day dedicated to Bornholm’s culinary innovation and natural beauty.
