Motsuji Temple
Depart the pier, and drive for approximately one hour and 45 minutes to the Motsuji Temple which was once a large and important temple of the Tendai sect, consisting of numerous buildings Today, It is best known for its garden, one of the few remaining pure land gardens in Japan. Pure land gardens were a popular garden style during the Heian Period (794-1185), attempting to recreate the Buddhist concept of the pure land or "Buddhist paradise". Like all pure land gardens, Motsuji's garden is centered around a large pond. The garden is best enjoyed by walking along the path that leads about 500 meters around the pond's circumference. The peaceful garden has seasonal flowers and is the perfect place to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Chusonji Temple and Japanese Lunch
After the lunch you will drive to Chusonji Temple which is Hiraizumi's most prominent attraction, established in 850 as a temple of the Tendai sect of Buddhism. The temple came to prominence when the northern branch of the Fujiwara clan moved their base to Hiraizumi. At its peak, the temple consisted of a large network of dozens of buildings. With the fall of the Fujiwara at the end of the 12th century, Chusonji suffered as well so that now only two buildings from that era remain intact. The Konjikido Hall (Golden Hall) completed in 1124, is the only 12th century structure to survive in its original form at Chūsonji temple. This small hall is dedicated to Amida Nyorai (the Buddha of Infinite Light) and apart from the roof, is covered with gold leaf both inside and out.
An approximate drive of 90 minute will return you to the pier.
