Genoa, Corso Italia, Boccadasse

Depart the pier for a scenic drive past Porto Antico, Genoa Harbour, and Piazza Cavour, along the seafront highway, Circonvallazione a Mare, and through the Corso Italia. One of the main arteries of Genoa, the Corso Italia overlooks the sea and is considered the promenade par excellence of the Genoese. Pass through the Foce district en route to the seaside enclave of Boccadasse. After a photo stop here, re-board your coach.

Piazza della Vittoria, Arco della Vittoria, Statues, Bas Reliefs, Monuments, Castelletto, Balcony View

Next, drive through the Piazza della Vittoria. Its hallmark feature is the impressive triumphal arch, the Arco della Vittoria, decorated with statues and bas-reliefs by various artists, among them Eugenio Baroni. In the background of the piazza, see the D'Oria Classical High School, adjacent Staircase of the Unknown Soldier. Afterward, drive to Castelletto for a photo stop at the fabulous 'balcony' suspended over the historic city centre. Enjoy a spectacular, 360-degree view out over the city and port. See rooftops made of slate, medieval towers, Baroque domes, and the distant sea. The high grounds form a backdrop dotted with parks, villas, and sanctuaries, and are crowned with the city's forts.

Cathedral of San Lorenzo, Cappella San Giovanni Battista, Free Time

From Piazza Matteotti, the busy Via San Lorenzo runs northwest to the harbour. Visit the dramatic Cathedral of San Lorenzo, built originally as a Romanesque Basilica in the 1100s, remodelled in the Gothic style in 1307, and finished off with a Renaissance dome in 1557. Inside, marvel at the large, 15th-century Cappella San Giovanni Battista. The earliest example of Renaissance architecture in Genoa, it was built to hold the remains of St. John the Baptist. Following your tour, some free time is made available in city center of Genoa for shopping and independent exploration. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the short drive to the pier.
