Excursion Welwitschia & the lost oasis tour at Namibe
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
The Welwitschia is a rare plant found in the Namibe Provence of South Angola and the Namib Desert. See them up close on this desert tour that gives you access also to the lost oasis in the Namibe desert.
Depart the quayside and drive to the desert border to see the untouched Welwitschia mirabilis, often called a living fossil, this rare plan can live for over 1000 years, thriving in the harsh desert environment. Continue through the desert landscape to the striking Arch Lagoon, also known as the lost oasis. The lagoon, locally known as “Lago do Arco do Carvalhao” is a magnificent rock formation, a unique place and work of art sculpted by nature. The water to the lagoon comes from the Curoca River, a dry river that only carries water during the rainy season. Here guests can stroll around and take in the beauty of this magnificent natural wonder before returning to the port.
Note
Please note: Angola is a very-low-income country with very basic infrastructure, and vastly different to the western culture mentality. Local conditions may be challenging; therefore, we urge flexibility and understanding as we visit unique and somewhat remote destinations. Coaches, guides, equipment, and services are the best-available in the area, but may not be up to the standards of those found on other excursions. Note that this tour includes approx. 90 minutes of driving each way and a moderate amount of walking to fully explore the sites visited on sandy ground and uneven, elevated terrain, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach, making this tour unsuitable for guests with mobility issues and wheelchairs. Lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes, sun protection and insect repellant is recommended. Anticipate high temperatures and humidity and we recommend staying hydrated by bringing your water bottle. Order of sites visited may vary from description. Guests are informed that tips to local guides and drivers are at the guest’s discretion.
