Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 30-minute drive along Vanua Levu's breath-taking coastal road en route to Nukubalavu (pronounced Nookoo-m-bar-lar-voo), Savusavu's chiefly village. Upon arrival, you are greeted by the village elders, and invited to witness and participate in a yaqona (kava) ceremony in which powdered kava is mixed with water and presented in a 'bilo' (coconut cup) to those who wish to taste this ceremonial drink. Kava ceremonies take place at all important Fijian occasions.

After the ceremony, take a guided walking tour of the village. Along the way, experience the warmth of the Fijian people. Enjoy entertainment that includes dancing and singing, visit the home of the Tui Nasavusavu, High Chief of Savusavu, mingle with the villagers and their children, learn about their culture, and see them work at their traditional crafts.

Refreshments, Handicrafts

Following your walking tour, enjoy a refreshing drink of 'bu' (green coconut juice) and an opportunity to browse the local handicrafts available for sale. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 40-minute drive back to the pier.

Note

Please note: This tour involves a small amount of walking, at times over uneven and natural surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach. This tour is suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe and non-slip hiking shoes, and bring sun protection, insect repellent, bottled water, and credit cards or local currency for purchases from the ship. When visiting a Fijian village, it is not polite for women to wear brief shorts and it is therefore recommended that a sarong be worn over the shorts whilst in the village. Longer (Bermuda) shorts are quite acceptable. Both men and women are advised to remove caps/hats during the kava ceremony and prior to entering a village hall. Guests must be at least 16 years old to participate on this tour. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian aged 18 years or older to participate on this tour. The tour sequence may vary. Fiji is a low-income country with very basic infrastructure, and vastly different to the western culture mentality. Local conditions may be challenging; therefore, we urge flexibility and understanding as we visit unique and somewhat remote destinations. Coaches, guides, hotels, restaurants, equipment, and services are the best-available in the area, but may not be up to the standards of those found on other excursions. We thank you for your understanding.
