Excursion Historic park architecture & flora of san diego tour at San Diego

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Embark on a walking tour of two iconic destinations in San Diego, both with notable architectural gems and an abundance of plant life. Start the day by traveling to Point Loma, site of the first European landing in California in 1542. Portuguese explorer Juan Cabrillo sighted this prominent peninsula and made landing for a Spanish expedition. Check out the picturesque statue of Cabrillo along with the Old Point Loma Lighthouse. While no longer in use, this New England style building is not only notable for an architectural style that is not prevalent on the west coast, but for its distinction as the highest elevated lighthouse in the country. Then descend to the Bayside Trail for a hike offering views of downtown San Diego, Coronado, the Naval Air Base and the Pacific Coast.

Head to Balboa Park for a walking tour generally featuring multiple architectural styles, each important to the history of San Diego. From 1915 and 1935 Expositions, the park has a number of buildings in a Spanish Colonial and Art Deco style. Highlights include the outside of the Spanish Art Village, The Old Globe, Museum of Us, Spreckels Organ Pavilion, San Diego Air & Space Museum and more. The trees, flowers, plants and succulents of the area, both native and non-native are abound.

Anyone wishing to stay longer and visit the inside of any of these museums may remain in the park and make their own way back to the ship.
