Excursion Chefchaouen, the charming blue city tour at Tanger

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Discover one of the most beautiful old cities in Morocco during this panoramic, full-day sightseeing excursion to Chefchaouen.

Tangier, Medina, Kasbah of Chefchaouen

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 2.5-hour drive to Chefchaouen. Upon arrival, a visit is made to the Old Kasbah in the Medina. The Kasbah of Chefchaouen dates from the early-18th century and was built by the legendary ruler, Moulay Ismail. The Kasbah of Chefchaouen is fairly simple, and without architectural surprises; however it is surrounded by lovely exterior and interior gardens. Upon entering the Old Kasbah, visit the Ethnographic Museum.

Old Medina, Guided Stroll, Blue-and-White Painted Town, Balconies, Tiled Roofs, Patios, Trees

Next, take a guided stroll through the blue-washed town (Old Medina) and learn about the history of Chefchaouen. Along the way, a photo stop is made for breath-taking panoramic vistas of this Hispanic-flavoured town, which is lined with blue-and-white-painted houses, tiny balconies, tiled roofs and patios embellished with citrus trees.

Plaza Uta el-Hammam, Free Time, Grand Mosque, Lunch

Next, visit the cobbled main square, Plaza Uta el-Hammam. Here, some free time is made available for independent exploration and an exterior visit to the striking, 15th-century Grand Mosque. The Grand Mosque and its nearby buildings were built by Jewish refugees, who, alongside Muslims, escaped Spanish persecution in Chefchaouen. Until the Spanish arrived in the 1920s, this town remained isolated except for three western men who snuck in. Your tour concludes with lunch at a local venue offering a stunning view of Chefchaouen. After lunch, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 2.5-hour drive back to the pier.
