Excursion Black beaches walk & drive tour at Djupivogur

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Iceland's scenery is unlike anyplace else, and the small village of Djupivogur is surrounded by mountains, glaciers, lava formations, moss-covered cliff, and deep valleys. This outing offers an introduction to this stunning visual feast.

Black Beaches

It starts at the pier where you will board a small bus taking you to the Black beaches. Iceland is one of the few countries in the world whose beaches all feature black sand. It is a very dramatic and beautiful characteristic of the landscape here and speaks to the volcanic nature of this gorgeous country. You are headed to the small islands located north of Djúpivogur village. In the past, these islands were accessible only by boat. Today, you can walk out to them due to the formation of natural causeways, in the form of black-sand beaches, that now surround the islands. This has to do with slow changes in tidal and current conditions that have led to deposits of sand and coastal debris building up over many years.

Ulfsey Beach, Sandey Island

You will walk along Ulfseyjarsandur (Ulfsey Beach) and out to Ulfsey Island, with a couple of stops along the way. On a clear day, from here you can glimpse the famous Papey Island -- widely recognized as one of Iceland's premier bird-watching locales. Finish up at Sandey Island before walking back, along the beach, to where the bus will be waiting.
