Excursion Wwii – oslo’s historical journey tour at Oslo
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Step directly into history on a half-day expedition that visits three significant venues that together recount the story of Norway’s five years under German occupation during WWII.
Explore the Holocaust Center
Located some 30 minutes from the pier by coach, The Center for Studies of Holocaust and Religious Minorities is ensconced in Villa Grande, the former residence of controversial war-era figure Vidkun Quisling on the scenic Bygdøy Peninsula. This modern exhibition focuses on the Holocaust and other genocides – presenting images, sound, film, artifacts, and original text documents that look back at what happened in Europe and also portray the situation of minorities at risk in contemporary societies.
Visit the OHG Bunker
During the war, the Germans built over 30 massive bunkers in Oslo, but just two are open to the public to explore. Descend under street level on a uniquely immersive journey into the preserved OHG (Oslo Handelsgymnasium) bunker that was built beneath a public school and used as a Wehrmacht and Gestapo headquarters during the Occupation. Discover how the Germans adapted schools and hotels for military purposes, even installing air defense artillery on their roofs.
Walk the artworks at Rose Castle
High in the forested hills above Oslo, the Rose Castle outdoor art installation is centered around five sculpted golden monuments that symbolize the years of Norway’s WWII occupation and tower over concentric landscaped walkways where some 300 artworks use the language of creativity to evoke and challenge your thoughts about democracy, rule of law, and humanism. Designed by two famous Norwegian artist brothers, Vebjørn and Eimund Sand, this captivating venue has appeared on Time Magazine’s "World's 100 Greatest Places" list for good reason. Even the views of the fjord and city from up here are inspiring. Before the 30-minute drive back to the pier, enjoy them over a coffee-and-waffle snack break.

Guests must be able to board the coach on their own and the bunker is not accessible for those who utilize wheelchairs or walkers. Wear layered, weather-appropriate clothing and comfortable walking shoes. The order of sights and activities may vary.
