Excursion World cruise collection: private visit at japanese northernmost winery tour at Otaru
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Hokkaido, with its extreme temperature differences and low humidity, is one of Japan's leading wine grape producing regions. There has been an increase in the number of wineries producing wine with grapes produced in Hokkaido, and "Hokkaido-produced wine" is starting to draw attention. Discovering the beautiful scenery, the climate and culture of the production area, meeting people involved in wine making, and eating with local agricultural products that match wine are one of the great attractions of wine tourism. Although viticulture and the cultivation of grapes for table consumption has a long history in Japan, domestic wine production using locally produced grapes only really began with the Western culture during the Meiji restoration in the second half of the 19th century. According to date for 2017, approximately 382,000 kilolitres of wine was purchased in Japan, or which two thirds was imported wine.
