Excursion Tarcoles river and crocodile safari tour at Puntarenas

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

This adventure takes visitors along the Tarcoles River, near Carara National Park. The area is known for its mangrove forests, holding within it four different species of mangroves: tea, black, red and white mangrove. Mangroves are a group of unrelated woody plants that grow in protected tropical coasts and that provide a great habitat for many endemic birds like the cuckoo, hummingbirds, vireo, Panama flycatchers and many herons and egrets. These areas are also home to over 250 species of birds, mammals, and insects.

The river shores are home to one of the largest crocodile colonies, with some crocs reaching lengths of nearly three meters. Iguanas, Jesus Christ lizards as well as many birds like herons, egrets and ducks are easily seen looking for food along the riverbanks. This 90-minute boat journey will help you learn about the importance of mangroves and why they must be preserved as a way of conservation to save all living species on Earth.
