Excursion St david’s head and carn llidi hike tour at Fishguard
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Explore two of the most prominent landmarks on the Pembrokeshire coast in an active new way during this scenic and exhilarating, half-day hiking excursion.
Fishguard, Whitesands Bay, Guided Hiking Trek, Site of St. Patrick's Chapel
Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 45-minute drive to Whitesands Bay. Upon arrival, begin your guided, circular walk from the glorious sandy sweep of Whitesands Bay, a curving, approximately one-mile-long (about 1.6-kilometre-long) expanse of flat sands that is considered to be one of the finest beaches in the country. As soon as you join the coastal path, see the site on which St. Patrick's Chapel was built. Although there are no visible remains, it was built on the spot where St. Patrick originally embarked for Ireland. Here, sea voyagers used to pray for a safe journey and offer thanks for their arrival.
St. David's Head, Bay and Sound Views, Coastal Route, St. David's Cathedral, St. Bride's Bay
Next, follow the path which steady climbs uphill and brings you to the end of St. David's Head, a wild and often windswept peninsula. Upon arrival, marvel at the superb views across Whitesands Bay to Ramsey Sound, the lovely bays of Porth Lleuog and Porthmelgan, and out to the rocky profile of Carn Llidi. Continue walking along this wild stretch of coast towards Carn Llidi. Whilst difficult to see amidst the rocky terrain, the 5,000-year-old burial chamber of Coetan Arthur lies below the wall of crags. The views soon opens up along the north coast of Pembrokeshire, which stretches from Amroth in the south to Dogmaels in the north, and then across the flat country to St David's Cathedral en route to the coast of St. Bride's Bay.
Carn Llidi, Summit Walk, Panoramic Views, Wicklow Hills, Whitesands Bay
Upon arrival at Carn Llidi, ascend to its approximately 595-foot (about 181-metre) summit. The path to the summit is rough, but well-defined, and rewards you with magnificent views that, on a clear day, extend to the Wicklow hills in Ireland (weather-permitting). After descending Carn Llidi, head around to Whitesands Bay, where your hike ends. At the conclusion of your tour, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 45-minute drive back to the pier.
