Excursion Shirakami-sanchi forest trek tour at Noshiro

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Journey into the Shirakami-Sanchi, one of the world’s largest remaining primeval beech forests and a UNESCO World Heritage Natural Property straddling Aomori and Akita. Your day begins at the Visitor Center, where engaging exhibits introduce the region’s ancient beech ecosystems, rare wildlife, and the relationship between the forest and the people who have lived alongside it for centuries.

Continue to the trailhead and begin a gentle beginner-level trek through a lush, living tapestry of towering wingnut trees and magnificent Japanese beech rising nearly 80 feet above the forest floor. As you walk, enjoy the cool air, filtered sunlight, and the peaceful soundscape of this untouched northern woodland. Guides share insights into the area’s biodiversity, including species found only in Japan, such as the Japanese serow, the Japanese dormouse, and raptors that may soar overhead. While encounters with wildlife are never guaranteed, walking through their natural habitat offers a deeper appreciation of this globally significant ecosystem.

After the trek, relax with a Japanese boxed lunch enjoyed outdoors near the Anmon Center House, surrounded by the forested scenery that defines the Shirakami Mountains.

Following your time in nature, return to the port enriched by a memorable encounter with one of Japan’s most treasured wild landscapes.
