Okinawa Island, Naha

Okinawa-Honto, the main island, is the largest and most important in the Nansei-Shoto Islands. Its cultural differences with mainland Japan were once evident in its architecture, of which almost all traces were obliterated during World War II. The USA retained control of Okinawa after the war, eventually handing it back to Japan in 1972. Naha is the capital of Okinawa, where little remains of the old Ryukyu culture.

Okinawa Prefectural Museum

Your first stop on this half-day tours is Okinawa Prefectural Museum. This museum was originally established in 1945 to introduce Okinawan history and culture for the US Military and politicians, and it was located close to Shurijo Castle. After the return of Okinawa to Japan in 1972, the purpose of this museum became to collect Okinawan local arts & crafts and learn history and tradition of Okinawa. Then the building today was constructed in 2007. Today‘s building was mainly constructed of Okinawan limestone and designed with the image of Gusuku (Okinawan castle). The museum have 5 genre of exhibition regarding Okinawa, which are Natural History, Archaelogy, Arts and Crafts, History and Folk life.
