Excursion Island fortifications tour tour at St Helena

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

The volcanic tropical island St. Helena played a strategic role for Britain during the days of sailing ships trading with the Far East. Visit some of the historically important fortifications that have made this island the place that it is today, and enjoy impressive views that cannot be missed.

The tour starts with the imposing Jamestown Fortification at the sea front in Jamestown, which protected the harbor over many battles between the 16th and 20th centuries.

From here, travel out of the valley to the Ladder Hill Fortification on the west side of the town, where one of the batteries gives spectacular views of the town and harbor. View the site of gun emplacements and walk around the parade ground to learn about the former military barracks.

Continue through Jamestown to the next stop at High Knoll fort, one of the most prominent Forts on the island positioned in the center. From here, enjoy panoramic vistas of the stunning and varied landscape of this beautiful and important volcanic island.
