Panoramic Drive & Village of Pyrgi
Depart the pier for a scenic drive and learn how local farmers score the bark of the Lentisk tree, part of the pistachio family, to collect its aromatic gum. Head to the charming Mastichochorian village of Pyrgi, one of the many fortified towns built to protect the island's mastic industry. Explore this local village, one of your must-see stops should be the St Apostle's Church, a 16th century village church that is a miniature replica of the island's famous Nea Moni Monastery. Turn any corner in this 13th century fortified village and you will find many works of wonder including the winding cobblestone roads and buildings that are decorated in 'Xysta', a geometric design in black and white plaster. Christopher Columbus also reportedly stayed at a house in Pyrgi during a brief visit to Khios in search of ancient maps.
Windmills
After your visit, re-board your coach and continue to the area of Tampakika and its windmills, which is nowadays a very picturesque and characteristic sight of Chios. During the late 19th century and early 20th century these windmills were a part of the local industrial production of leather products.
Homer's Rock
You final stop will be at the Homer's Rock on the Vrontados coast, and a must for any lovers of the classics and great literature. Ancient documents claim that the poet, author of the epic poems 'The Iliad' and 'Odyssey', was born on this tiny island. He is reputed to have sang, taught and composed many of his most complex works sitting on what is now known as 'Homer's Rock'. After climbing up twenty steps and walking along uneven pathways you too will be able to sit and wait for inspiration to strike.
The tour concludes back at the pier.
