Manaus, City Centre, City Museum of Manaus, Architecture, Exhibits, Artefacts, Articles
Depart the pier aboard the shuttle bus for the short drive to the terminal, then proceed for a short, guided walk from the port to the historical city centre of Manaus. Upon arrival, your first stop is at the City Museum of Manaus, located in Paço da Liberdade, the museum combines architectural beauty, technological exhibitions, archaeological relics, and regional articles. The contents of its eight rooms recount more than 350 years of the city’s western history, but more than 10,000 years of indigenous culture. See portraits of past city leaders in the Mayor’s Room, enjoy interactive displays in the Room of Growth Rings, explore the Amazon in the Room of Flying Rivers, and discover Manaus’ cultural identity in the Market Room.
Cathedral of Manaus, Chapel, Baptistery, Three Altars, Church Bells
Next, walk over to the Cathedral of Manaus, founded in 1877 and built on the same site as the old chapel built by Carmelite missionaries in 1695. The façade is divided into two floors, with few ornamental elements; its six bells were imported from Europe and installed in 1875. The Cathedral maintains a prominent position in the landscape of downtown Manaus. Located on a small elevation in front of the Port of Manaus, it was the first major architectural work carried out in the city. Marking its history are the visits by the Brazilian Imperial Family, in 1927, and Pope John Paul II, in 1980, during his first apostolic trip to Brazil. Afterward, return on-foot to the port terminal, then board a shuttle bus for the short ride back to the pier and your ship.
