Discover the monasteries, convents, churches and shrines of the area followed by a visit to the magnificent Notre-dame-du-cap Sanctuary, North America's largest place of worship devoted to the Virgin Mary.


City Tour

The tour begins in the city center as you pass the Ursuline Monastery. The Ursulines were the first community to become established at Trois Rivières in 1697. Continuing past Saint-James Church, Monument to the Frères des Écoles Chrétiennes and the Sacré Cœur Monument, and the Assomption de Marie Cathedral. The Gothic-styled cathedral opened for worship in 1858 and features stained glass windows created by master glass artist Guido Nincheri as well as one of the largest organs in Quebec with 5,751 pipes. Additional highlights include the Précieux-Sang and Carmélites Monasteries, Séminaire Saint-Joseph, Crypt of Father Fréderéric, Convent of the Sœurs de la Charité of Ottowa, and the Manoir des Jésuits.


Notre-dame-du-cap Sanctuary

Next arrive into Cap-de-la-Madeleine on the shores of the St Lawrence River for a visit of Notre-dame-du-cap Sanctuary. With its modern basilica, old sanctuary, impressive stained-glass windows and magnificent gardens, the shrine to the Virgin Mary is both a spiritual and cultural attraction. Opened in 1720, it is the oldest church in the country to have been completely preserved. Pilgrimages to the shrine began in the early 19th century. In 1984, even Pope Jean-Paul II arrived for a visit of the shrine.
