Excursion Historic freetown tour at Freetown
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Jumbled and beautifully chaotic, set amidst ocean and white sand beaches, Freetown is a vibrant port city and the capital of Sierra Leone in West Africa. This colorful city is a bundle of fascinating contradictions, with peaceful beaches adjacent to its gritty streets in this busy major port on the Atlantic Ocean.
Freetown is known also for its history, particularly its role in the slave trade from Africa to the Americas. Freetown was founded as a city in 1792 by Lieutenant John Clarkson and African American ex-slaves, serving as a haven for freed (and freeborn) African Americans and other liberated African and Caribbean settlers. Visit the Sierra Leone National Museum, the historic Cotton Tree, and the St. George's Cathedral, built in 1817. Take a stroll through the Big Market before making the transfer back to the port
