San Anton Gardens and Palace, and Mdina and Mdina Gate
Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 30-minute drive to the San Anton Gardens. Located in Attard, this 16th-century palace is the official residence of the President of Malta, and surrounded by private and public gardens. San Anton Palace has also been featured as a setting in the popular HBO series, Game of Thrones. Following your guided tour, re-board your coach and head to Mdina. The 4,000-year-old capital of Malta, Mdina is a medieval walled town on a hill in the centre of the island, and is known as the 'Silent City'. Mdina and its gorgeous Mdina Gate and Mesquida Square were also featured in the filming of the Game of Thrones series. During your guided visit, a stop is made at a panoramic viewpoint and some free time, time permitting, is made available to explore your surrounds at your leisure .
Verdala Palace (view from the distance) and the Buskett Gardens
Next, re-board your coach and continue on to the vicinity of Verdala Palace. Since 1987, Verdala Palace has been the official summer residence of the President of Malta, but its origins date back to the 16th century, when it was built on the site of a hunting lodge. The elegant palace is surrounded by the Buskett Gardens, which were used by the Knights of Malta to hunt game, and by Napoleon as a military prison in the 18th century. After a long period of disrepair, the palace was restored and its Buskett Gardens are now open to the public. Following a photo stop here, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 35-minute drive back to the pier.
