Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Discover the wonders of the Tongass National Forest on this excursion that introduces you to local flora and fauna and brings you to the beautiful Rainbow Falls. Departing from the pier, travel a short way along the waterfront to the Rainbow Falls nature trail in the amazing Tongass National Forest. Stretching over 16.7 million acres the Tongass National Forest in Southeast Alaska is the largest national forest in the United States, containing multiple ecosystems (primarily Pacific temperate rain forest) and is where many endangered plant and animal species can be found. The forest was declared a national reserve by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1907.
Arrive to the head of the Rainbow Falls trail and begin to follow the meandering path through tall evergreen trees within the Tongass National Forest. Your guide can point out a variety of natural plants and teach you how to use them as locals have for centuries. The path is a natural forest floor material of wood and some gravel.
The path crosses a stream after which a series of uneven stairs lead up to Rainbow Falls. There is a lower and upper deck from where the series of cascading waterfalls may be seen in a spectacular display. There are many stairs on this part of the walk, so be prepared for a strenuous climb.
