Excursion Explore the borbonic gallery & pizza experience tour at Naples
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Combining the splendorous with the mysterious with the delicious, this half-day guided walk has something for everyone. Take in impressive city sights above ground, then venture underground to explore the fascinating Galleria Borbonica tunnel. Afterwards, dine on a certain tomato-and-cheese flatbread delight invented right here in Naples.
Walking tour, Piazza Plebiscito
Lead by your knowledgeable guide, you’ll set out on foot from the port, spending the first 30 minutes taking in sights like the 13th-century Castel Nuovo, an awe-inspiring 5-towered fortress with Triumphal Arch dominating the harbor. As you progress, narrow city streets give way to the Piazza del Plebicito – a sprawling pedestrianized central square forming the heart of the city. Anchored by marquee structures, highlights here include the stately red Royal Palace, beautifully colonnaded Church of San Francesco di Paola, the Teatro di San Carlo, and handsome Galleria Umberto.
Borbonic Gallery Underground Visit
Having learned about these street-level stunners, a stroll below ground will soon reveal the odd world of Galleria Borbonica, a gigantic arched tunnel built in 1853 by King Ferdinand II of Bourbon to provide a hidden connection between the Royal Palace and the barracks. During these turbulent times, the King liked the idea of having an escape route large enough to accommodate the royal carriage – and this passage, incorporating a 17th-century aqueduct system, fit the bill. During WWII, this same gallary sheltered thousands of Neapolitans from relentless air raids. A wealth of curious debris was left behind for you to encounter during your underground visit, including dusty vintage cars and decaying motorbikes.
Napolitan Pizza, Lunch
Back above ground, stroll along the Naples waterfront and ogle the Castle of the Egg, a formidable 12th-century stronghold from the Norman era, before landing at a typical Neapolitan pizzeria – and your lunch of delicious Pizza Margherita.
At the end of your lunch, walk back to the pier.
