Excursion Andavadoaka tour at Andavadoaka

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Experience the rarely-visited small fishing community of Andavadoaka, home to the Vezo people. The Vezo are known for their interdependence with the ocean and their avid fishing skills.

Andavadoaka village lies on the edge of a shallow lagoon protected from the open ocean by a series of fringing and submerged barrier reefs that support substantial coral growth. The reef provides a vital resource for a local artisanal fishery. Owing to the remote setting and geographic isolation, these coral reefs are thought to possess a significantly higher abundance and diversity of species than other reefs in southwest Madagascar. Biodiversity studies have identified many hundreds of marine species in the waters in the area.

Upon arrival, learn about community projects managed by an organization called Velondriake, an association of local people protecting the land and conserving the sea. Guided by technical assistance from the British organization Blue Venture, these projects assist and promote the sustainable management of marine resources.

The reefs around Andavadoaka represent some of the most well-developed coral reef systems in the Indian Ocean and allow for beautiful snorkeling. Make a visit to tiny Nosy Hao for a leisurely few hours of swimming, snorkeling and relaxing on sandy white beaches. After lecture and some refreshments, take a guided walk through the village of Andavadoaka before returning to the ship.
