Excursion Ancient pompei & sorrento coast tour at Capri

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Discover one of the most significant archaeological sites in the world, providing dramatic and detailed evidence of an early Roman civilization that was destroyed in a moment. Pompeii is legendary for its incredibly well-preserved ruins, mostly due to the nature of the volcanic ash that killed all in its path. Explore these ruins, discovered in just 1748 when the site was discovered.

Travel to Pompeii via hydrofoil and cruise to through the Gulf of Naples to arrive at your coach in Naples. From there drive 30-40 minutes takes to the excavated town of Pompeii. As you drive, look in the distance for a glimpse of Mount Vesuvius. Though this dangerous volcano has not erupted since 1944 it is still active.

Pompeii Ruins

Buried for centuries, the ruins of Pompeii provide insight into the life of a bygone era, with detailed remnants of daily life such as electoral propaganda and even risqué jokes depicted on the walls of houses.

Meet your guide upon arrival in Pompeii, and tour the ancient streets in this unparalleled chance to learn about the historical events and the tragic demise of the city and its 20,000 people. The catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. surprised the population of this prosperous provincial capital and resort town, burying it under 20 feet (6 meters) of ash and pumice stone, yet preserving an entire city.

City Tour and Lunch

On your tour explore the artwork and mansions of Pompeii's wealthy residents, who retreated to Pompeii for its relative peace away from the turmoil of Ancient Rome. On your exclusive tour inside the excavation sites, see the interior of several homes and places of business bearing numerous paintings and inscriptions, including notices about wine sales, apartment vacancies, upcoming events, political announcements, and even personal love notes.

Walk amongst the institutions of formerly vibrant Pompeii, including the open and covered theaters that seated thousands, the Forum - central to daily political life - and the Stabian Baths, still breathtakingly exquisite in their design and decoration despite their ancient and ruined state.

Wind through the endless pathways filled with fascinating buildings, some of which are still decorated in their original marble facades, preserved frescoes and beautiful tile mosaic images. After your visit to this unforgettable site, dine on lunch at a local restaurant and reflect on all you saw over a glass of wine.

Scenic Drive to Sorrento

Return to your coach and drive one hour to Sorrento on a route that offers splendid views of the immaculate, colorful coast full of brilliantly painted cliff-top homes and buildings that appear to have been born directly from the rocky cliff. At the Sorrento pier, board the scheduled hydrofoil for the cruise back to Capri and your ship.
