Excursion Umlalazi nature reserve hike tour at Richards Bay
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Hike the Umlalazi Reserve on this half-day (four hours) adventure that affords birders and non-birders the opportunity to explore a diverse South African ecosystem.
Embark from the pier and board your coach for the 45-minute drive south along the N2 toward Durban before leaving the highway to travel toward the town of Mtunzini. The town, situated on a hill overlooking the coastline, has a pristine dune forest and an estuary lined with mangrove swamp forest. Observe the parks and avenues of indigenous trees lining the streets of this town whose name means "in the shade." Come to know the connection between the open, verdant spaces in Mtunzini and the indigenous bush that create natural corridors for the movement of wildlife between agricultural lands, the town, and Umlalazi Reserve.
Arrive at the trailhead in the Umlalazi reserve and, with your guide, set off on a fulfilling two-hour gentle trek over generally flat terrain and boardwalks. Walk until the trail links up to the Raffia Palm Monument, situated just outside the Reserve. Along the way take in the mangrove trees, both black and white varieties, growing along the Umlalazi River that are some of the last remaining along this coast. Learn about the reserve's first Conservation Officer who introduced these trees to the Umlalazi.
Keep your eyes peeled for the abundant avian wildlife attracted to the indigenous flora that provide an excellent food source. Spot birds such as the Green Coucal, African Crested Flycatcher White-eared Barbet, Lemon Dove, Scaly-throated Honeyguide, and Olive and Grey Sunbird. And, as if these aren't enough, also look for the Gorgeous Bush Shrike, Narina Trogon, Forest Weaver, Green Twinspot, Southern Banded Snake Eagle, Trumpeter Hornbill, Red-capped Robin-chat and Wattle Eyed Flycatcher.
Reboard your coach for the drive back to the pier in Richards Bay.
