Excursion Thuborbo majus & dar zaghouan farm tour at Tunis

Romans, Monuments and the Road to Carthage

Embark the coach for a full day excursion by driving 75 minutes to the Roman archeological site of Thuborbo Majus. Surrounded by shimmering wheat fields and olive groves like those that made its fortune, Thuburbo Majus has a prosperous air even in its ruinous state. This site has partially been excavated and is dotted with many buildings, mostly monumental. Take a guided walk inside the archeological site. Visit the Capitole with four full-length fluted Corinthian columns that dominates the site. The four giant reconstructed pillars of veined pink marble marking the entrance to the temple, which honours the Capitoline Triad: Jupiter, the king of the gods; Juno, his wife; and Jupiter's daughter Minerva, the goddess of music, poetry, medicine and wisdom. The Temple of Peace holds a few stone bas-reliefs, including one of Pegasus. Other highlights include the unusual Temple of Mercury, Temple of Peace, Temple of Caelestis, Palaestra of the Petronii, summer and winter baths and much more.

Mountains, Farmland and Faire

Re-board the coach for a 30 minute drive to the peaceful town of Zaghouan on the northern side of the Tunisian Dorsal Mountains featuring shimmering wheat fields and olive groves. This follows with a visit at Dar Zaghouan farm, the first ecological farm in Tunisia where a guided visit of the local workshop, Andalusian pastry, Berber bread, cheese, vegetable garden, traditional oil mill and medical plant distillation are seen. This guided tour is followed by lunch that offers Tunisian farm faire consisting of Berber bread, farm salad, grilled vegetables, couscous and fish.

Temple of Water, Aqueducts and Medina

Following lunch, re-board the coach for the Temple of Water. It testifies the importance of water to such a point that is was venerated by the Romans. It was part of the complex system that provided the city of Carthage with water. This temple used to be the starting point of the longest Roman Aqueducts which for 76 mi/132km to Carthage. Next visit the Andalusian Neighborhood and its unique architecture from Spain.

Please note: This tour involves an moderate amount of walking, at times over uneven ground in the Thuborbo Majus, paved surfaces, cobblestones and inclinations in Medina of Zaghouan, a flight of stairs in the Roman Temple of Water, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach. This tour is recommended for active guests in good physical condition. This tour is suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair as long as guests are able to embark and disembark the vehicle without assistance. Medina of Zaghouan and Thuborbo Majus have wheelchair accessibility. Guests are advised to wear comfortable/ sturdy walking shoes, and bring sun protection, biodegradable sunscreen, insect repellent, water and US Dollars, Euros or Dinars in small notes for purchases at local markets. . Coaches, guides, hotels, restaurants, equipment, and services are the best-available in the area, but may not be up to the standards of those found on other excursions. The coaches are air-conditioned. It is forbidden to take pictures of Government and Police buildings. The tour sequence may vary.
