Stroll the village's main promenade, exploring the small town's cafés and shops. Next, board a traditional wooden boat for a short ride to the small island of Spinalonga. Spinalonga was first inhabited by the Christians. Later, the Venetians constructed an impressive fortress on the island. Spinalonga was eventually turned into a restricted leper colony by the Greek state. Explore the island and learn about its rich history, before enjoying a return ride back to Plaka village where you will enjoy a light Greek lunch at the local tavern.

The lake, the town's jewel, is known for its many legends, according to one of which, Athena and Artemis are bathing in its waters. The lake becomes one with the sea through a narrow canal and is surrounded by red rock formations and lush vegetation. Stores sell unique traditional Cretan art artifacts, copies from the local archaeological museums, jewels, and impressive embroidery.
