Excursion Sites of the south isles with st. magnus cathedral tour at Kirkwall
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Depart along the coast of Scapa Flow to the smaller South Isles. Drive over the first of the Churchill Barriers commissioned during the Second World War to protect Scapa Flow from enemy invasion. Visit the beautiful, hand-painted Italian Chapel resourcefully built by Italian prisoners of war out of scavenged construction material.
Continue south across two further Churchill Barriers to the island of South Ronaldsay and on to the pretty village of St. Margaret's Hope. Local legend has it that the village is named after Margaret, Maid of Norway, who died near here on her way to marry King Edward II of England. You will have the opportunity to spend some time here, allowing you to explore the historic streets and visit the local craft shops or cafes.
Return to Kirkwall to visit the beautiful 12th century sandstone St. Magnus Cathedral built by the Vikings during their 700-year rule over the islands.
