Excursion Sestri levante and wine tasting tour at Genoa
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Discover a city with exceptional charm and a winery with some very unique appellations on this half-day excursion to the Ligurian commune of Sestri Levante. Long known as the City of Two Seas, the town occupies an isthmus nestled between two bays along the Gulf of Tigullio. Besides offering stunning views, the locals have a taste for elegant palaces with pastel-colored facades that perfectly reflect in the sea.
Your hour long drive from Genoa pier to Sestri traverses coastal bluffs that set the stage for scenic beauty. On arrival, after a brief orientation from your guide, you will have about an hour to savor some of the local color independently. Then, it is time for a different sort of savoring as you continue to the Bisson winery for a cellar tour and a tasting of two glasses of wine from the estate, accompanied by snacks like local focaccia and olives.
Back in 1978, Bisson’s founders recognized that some of the local wines made by Ligurian farmers had broader potential. They began to experiment with vinifying in small batches, and soon, the excellent results had revived several nearly forgotten Ligurian varietals like Bianchetta Genovese and Cimixià and sparked the creation of all-new wines like Musaico, a red with a bold personality.
That success led to an audacious new goal: producing the first Ligurian sparkling wine. Today, bottles of Spumante degli Abissi are locked in metal cages and submerged in the cool depths of the Baia del Silenzio, where they age for 26 months in the dim light, gently rocked by the sea currents and return to the surface as a delicious sparkling wine like no other.
That inventiveness along with the beauty of Sestri Levante make this an inspiring outing, indeed.
