Excursion Ruins and aromatic spice farm tour at Zanzibar

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Uncover the connection between Zanzibar and spices on this half-day excursion. In the 19th century, the Sultan of Oman brought cloves to the island, which have since become Zanzibar's primary export. Visit the remnants of Maruhubi and Mtoni Palaces, constructed by sultans as residences for their wives, concubines, and numerous children. Journey into the countryside to immerse yourself in the scent, flavor, and feel of the spice plants that flourish here. You will have the opportunity to see the products you typically purchase in packets or jars at supermarkets. Make a stop at Kidichi to explore the Persian bath built by the first Sultan for his Persian wife before heading back to the port.

Note

Please note: A moderate amount of walking and standing for approximately 1.5 km (1 mile) over uneven grass and sandy surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and is not recommended for guests with limited mobility. Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim; all guests should be conservatively dressed, with shoulders and knees covered. Photographing individuals in uniforms is strictly prohibited to respect their privacy and security. Always ask for permission before taking any photos of individuals. Please check with your guide if you are unsure about photographing someone. As in the tropics, the temperatures and humidity can be quite high. Lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection is recommended. The order of sites or sides visited may vary depending on conditions and operational considerations.
