Excursion Picturesque poldark tour at Falmouth

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Poldark is based on the novels by Winston Graham, a romantic novel set in the days of Cornwall's 18th Century Cornwall's mining industry and was one of the most successful TV adaptations in the 1970's of all time. The famous novel was recently re-made in 2015 into a new TV series, which was hugely popular. Today, take a walk in the author's shoes and enjoy an intriguing tour visiting the places that inspired the author and locations where the recent Poldark TV series was filmed.

Portreath

The tour begins with a visit to Portreath, a small resort with a very narrow harbour located about 5 miles north of Redruth. It was once a busy port, importing coal and exporting copper but now only sheltering the occasional fishing boat. The original loading ramp can still be seen in the village. Copper ore was transported from mines, in the Chacewater area, using horse-drawn wagons and was shipped by the ton to Swansea in South Wales for smelting.

Wheal Coates

Next, travel to Wheal Coates, see the breath-taking view of the cliffs and imagine Ross Poldark famously galloping across them on his horse. View the delights of Chapel Porth beach and recognise the engine house, if you were to imagine the landscape in which Ross Poldark and Demelza lived out their dramatic lives, you wouldn't go far wrong in St Agnes Parish. In Poldark St Agnes Head was used to represent the Nampara Valley, part of Poldarks' family estate. Its engine houses on the cliff top reflect Cornwall's rich mining heritage. The location is a little further down the coast, and 30 miles from The Olde House, but the area is home to beaches Chapel Porth and Trevaunance cove. View the Stippy Stappy cottages which feature in Poldark and marvel at the quirky, steep row of terraced cottages.

Perranporth

The final stop is to Perranporth, just a few miles from St Agnes, and is where Winston Graham lived from the age of 17. The 13 Poldark novels in particular were significantly affected by Graham's relationship with the St Agnes landscape and the characters he met as a young man. Step on the golden sands of Perranporth beach and let your creative flow, as you'll be following in Winston Graham's very own footsteps. Hunt down the memorial bench nestled amongst the dunes and with your eye cast out to sea, let your mind fill with plots and characters, you never know, you could be dreaming up the next best seller.

After a fascinating tour re-board your vehicle and return to the ship.
