Edinburgh City Tour

Depart the pier for the approximate 30-minute drive to Edinburgh's city centre. Upon arrival, begin your sightseeing drive through the city and stop for photos along the way. Your guide points out some of the major highlights in this beautiful and unique city, including Edinburgh Castle. Perched upon the granite core of an extinct volcano, this magnificent fortress dominates the city's skyline. The oldest section of Edinburgh Castle dates from the 12th century. The castle has served as a royal palace, military garrison and state prison, and has been occupied by both the Scottish and English during its turbulent history.

Old Town and New Town

Next, drive through the Old Town of Edinburgh, which straddles the volcanic ridge between the castle and the Palace of Holyrood. Scotland's premier royal palace, the Palace of Holyrood, dates from the late-15th century and is the official Scottish residence of the Queen. To the north is the New Town, an area that was established in the 1790s when wealthy merchants began expanding the city outside of its Medieval walls. Here, marvel at the most beautiful concentration of Georgian architecture anywhere in Britain.

Royal Mile

Your drive continues along part of the Royal Mile, a thoroughfare linking the castle with the palace. At one mile (1.6 kilometres) in length, it forms the Medieval centre of the city. Drive through this area and see some of the most important historic buildings and monuments, including the Palace of Holyrood. Your tour concludes back at the pier.
