Excursion Oslo, from the heights to the sights tour at Oslo
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Cradled along a stunning fjord between forest-clad hills, Oslo beckons your exploration – and this curated experience offers up the best of its art, history, and panoramic views in a single full day.
Ekeberg Sculpture Park
Your Oslo intro begins with a 30-minute drive through steep green hills to a sprawling sculpture park where art and nature converge in perfect harmony. Walk downhill through the park to admire its 30+ sculpted works by Norwegian and international greats including Dalí, Vigeland, and Rodin – and discover the groundbreaking Pixel Forest, a digital art installation that envelops you in shifting lights and colors.
Holmenkollen Ski Jump & Alpine Lunch
An hour’s drive onward, up through the modern Bjørvika district and past landmarks like the Oslo Opera House and historic Akershus Fortress, stands Oslo’s über-famous ski jump, Holmenkollen. Its predecessor dated from 1892 and hosted the 1952 Olympics; this 2011 incarnation was rebuilt for modern World Championship competitions – and an elevator ride to the Observation Deck at its top leads to unforgettable panoramic city views. The Ski Museum beneath showcases the world’s oldest and largest collection of skis and related paraphernalia, including artifacts from Norwegian polar exploration legends Amundsen, Scott, and Nansen. After an hour-long sojourn, regroup and travel a short distance to Voksenåsen Hotel/Restaurant for a Nordic buffet lunch offering its own breathtaking views.
Maritime Museum & Oslo City Hall
Back at sea level on the Bygdøy Peninsula, the Norwegian Maritime Museum honors the region’s legacy of shipbuilding through the ages, from Viking days to the present. Must-sees during your hour visit are the original 1,100-year-old Viking longship and a reconstruction of a small vessel from the Gokstad find, underway on an open stage. Over at The Boat Hall, catch the fascinating Sjøveien exhibition – focused on life along the Norway coast and featuring the national collection of open traditional boats. Afterwards, reboard the coach and head to Oslo’s twin-towered City Hall for an exterior inspection of this striking red-brick landmark inaugurated in 1950 to commemorate the city’s 900th birthday. Every December, the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded inside its Grand Hall.
From here, you can remain in the city center for some further self-directed exploring or join your guide on a short drive back to the ship.
