Scenic Drive to Montecassino Abbey

Depart the pier in Gaeta for a panoramic drive of approximately 90-minutes through the lush landscapes of the Liri Valley toward Cassino. Rising majestically on a rocky hill, the Abbey of Montecassino stands as one of Europe’s most important religious sites. Founded in 529 AD by Saint Benedict, it became a symbol of faith, learning, and resilience.

During your guided visit, explore the abbey’s grand basilica and cloisters, rebuilt after its destruction in World War II. Admire the splendid mosaics, chapels, and panoramic views over the valley below while learning about the enduring Benedictine legacy that still thrives today.

Countryside & Winery Visit

Following your visit, continue to a family-run winery nestled in the Cassino countryside. Upon arrival, enjoy a guided walk through the estate, learning about the cultivation of local grape varieties and the production process.

Then, relax and savour a tasting of selected wines paired with local products such as cheeses, cured meats, and olive oil, a perfect reflection of Lazio’s rural traditions.

After this delightful interlude, re-board your coach and begin the scenic return drive of approximately 90-minutes back to the pier in Gaeta.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 1.5 miles (about 2.4 kilometres), at times over uneven and inclined surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate at Montecassino Abbey and Villa Matilde Winery. Walking is at the discretion of each guest. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. Comfortable, flat, closed-toe walking shoes, a hat, and sun protection are recommended. Proper attire is required to enter the Abbey; shorts, sleeveless tops, and mini-skirts are not permitted. Flash photography is not allowed inside the Abbey. Guests must be at least 18 years old to participate in the wine tasting.
