Excursion Lizard peninsula hike tour at Falmouth

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Indulge your senses with the splendid beauty of Cornwall during this half-day coastal trek on the Lizard Peninsula.

Lizard Peninsula

Depart the pier for the approximately 45-minute drive to the stunningly beautiful Lizard Peninsula, an ongoing source of inspiration for artists and writers. With the sea on three sides and Helford River to the north, the Lizard Peninsula is almost an island; a high plateau surrounded by sea, and studded with numerous coves and beaches. As you approach the area, the typical rolling West Cornwall terrain gives way to open landscapes. At the gateway to the Lizard Peninsula are the Culdrose Royal Naval Air Station and Goonhilly Satellite Earth Station. The rocks and cliffs of the coastline offer shelter to the tiny fishing villages huddled in their coves, and look much the same today as they did centuries ago. Upon arrival in Lizard Town, the southernmost point of England, a jagged coastline of ancient rocks surrounds the moorland.

Lizard Town and Coastal Hike

Your guided trek begins in Lizard Town at Lizard Point Village, where local workshops cut and polish a rare and colourful rock that is found in the area and utilised to produce dishes, jewellery, model animals and lighthouses. Lizard Point was notorious in early times as a site for shipwrecks due to the currents and strong winds produced as the Atlantic meets the English Channel. Follow green lanes and footpaths leading south to some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in the country. Whilst walking along the cliff-top, which is glorious with wildflowers in summer, see the Lizard Lighthouse, a former Lloyd's Signal Station and the site of one of Marconi's experimental wireless stations. Built in 1752 to oversee one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, the lighthouse became automated in 1999. Your coastal walk turns inland to return to Lizard village.

Upon returning to Lizard Town reboard your coach for the approximately 45-minute drive back to the pier.
