Excursion Island heritage discovery tour at Wrangell
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Join your Alaskan Native guide to experience the dynamic history of this ancient island community through the eyes of its first nation people, the ‘Tlingít. Your journey from past to present will begin as an invited guest crossing the wooden bridge over tidal waters into Chief Shakes Tribal House- a traditional cedar ceremonial building home to impressive totems and remarkably intricate carvings. Inside, you’ll be seated to learn about the house's history, cultural items, and hear stories shared there for centuries.
Re-board your shuttle to observe the historic streets of downtown Wrangell on your way to a sandy beach studded with the highest concentration of ancient petroglyph carvings in Southeast Alaska. Your guide will reveal the original stones, unravel the mysteries of the site and then assist you in creating a unique souvenir rubbing from your choice of replica.
The island’s rich and unruly history will take shape for you during a guided exploration of the Wrangell Museum. Here you will walk chronologically through thousands of artifacts and images of the ‘Tlingít origins, Russian settlement, British trading empire, gold rush frenzy and rugged logging legacy of our unique Alaskan town.
Your immersive cultural experience begins and ends at your ship’s pier.
