Excursion Cultural dance & music experience tour at Montevideo
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Discover the traditional Uruguayan Candombe where it originated on this half day (three hours) cultural experience. The centuries old style of drumming and dance began among the descendants of liberated African slaves. The word in Kikongo means "pertaining to blacks." In 2009, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organizations (UNESCO) recognized Candombe in its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Embark from the pier and board your coach for the 45-minute drive to "Barrio Sur," the neighborhood where the Candombe was born more than 200 years ago. Along the way your guide will point out notable and historical places that make up the people and culture of Montevideo today.
Arrive at your venue, the home of an award-winning Candombe comparsa (a full collective), Cuareim 1080, who will welcome you and invite you into their headquarters for a Candombe workshop and performance. Cuareim 1080 evolved from an earlier comparsa founded in 1943 by the Silva Brothers, who are credited with creating the modern Candombe rhythm. The Silva family still is emblematic of Candombe, opening their doors for you to experience this tradition from its deepest roots.
Try your rhythmic hand at some of the more than 40 available drums. Join the revels as you are treated to an authentic Candombe performance with carnival costumes and hats. Sip exquisite Uruguayan wine. Laugh and sway as you ride the emotion and power of this most celebratory Uruguayan experience.
Return to your coach for a 15-minute return trip to the pier.
