Excursion Crofting shetland – sheepdog trials and shetland ponies tour at Lerwick

Departing Lerwick, head west to the picturesque harbour village of Hamnavoe on the isle of Burra. After a brief photo stop, continue North towards Girlsta, through the Tingwall Valley with its Norse Heritage before arriving at the “Keolka” croft - a beautiful Shetland croft nestled within the rugged heather hills, with stunning views across the water. Here guests will enjoy an authentic crofting experience, as well as getting to meet a local crofter and his dogs.
David Murray is an active crofter/farmer in the North of Shetland and is widely known throughout the sheepdog trialling world having qualified for the Scottish National Team, The International Supreme Championship, and the World Sheepdog Trials with his dog Sweep
At the event, witness working Sheepdog demonstrations with a talk on their training, see some of the native, coloured Shetland sheep and witness a sheep shearing demonstration (weather dependant), meet Shetland ponies, and enjoy a talk on the typical year in the life of a Shetland crofter.
On the way back to Lerwick, hear more of Shetland's culture and heritage.

Please note: The activity level is easy, but the croft is located on a gentle grassy slope that may be muddy depending on the weather, with some heather and gravel paths. The tour is suitable for wheelchair users, though they must be accompanied as guides cannot take responsibility for them. There is limited walking, but guests will be standing for over an hour at the croft, with some bench seating available. Guests are advised to wear warm, waterproof clothing and sturdy footwear. Some aspects of the tour, like the sheep shearing demonstration, are weather dependent.
