Sannai Maruyama Historical Site
From the pier, board your motor coach for a short drive to Sannai Maruyama, one of the largest archaeological sites in Japan. This historical landmark covers approximately 100 acres and is part of the UNESCO-listed Jomon Prehistoric Sites in Northern Japan. Dating from the Jomon Period (13,000-300 B.C.), the village features reconstructed stilt-supported buildings, the remains of large pit dwellings, and a tower. Adjacent to the site is Jomon Jiyukan, a cultural center exhibiting artifacts excavated from the area. As you explore the site, discover how a community developed thousands of years ago.
Aomori Museum of Art
Next, reboard your coach and proceed to the Aomori Museum of Art, which houses a collection of modern and contemporary artwork created mainly by local artists and those with connections to Aomori. The museum also displays works by some well-known European artists. Noteworthy museum pieces include “Aomori Dog,” a gigantic sculpture of a dog by local artist Nara Yoshitomo, and the three panels of the backdrop for the ballet piece “Areco,” painted by Marc Chagall.
Your enriching discovery of Aomori concludes with a short drive back to the pier and your awaiting ship.
