Excursion Ahuriri estuary & taradale cycling tour at Napier

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Your cycling adventure begins at the Takaro Trails base in the historic port village of Ahuriri, Napier. You will be set up on your comfortable, hybrid style bike and be given a safety briefing by your guide before joining the cycle trail to make your way past fishing boats and old port warehouses to the Ahuriri Estuary. The trail then meanders for approximately 10km through a Department of Conservation protected low-lying wetlands area, home to many species of wading birds and other wildlife. As you make your way along the trail it is sobering to reflect that prior to the 1931 earthquake this area was all a vast tidal inlet before the land lifted 1.8m in the mighty shake.

Leaving the estuary behind it's a further 3km through sheep farming country to the suburb of Taradale. Here you will make a visit to New Zealand's oldest winery, the Mission Estate, and enjoy morning tea on the lawn of this stately, old building.

Back on the bike you complete the loop back to Ahuriri where you're cycling efforts will be rewarded with a visit to the Tony Bish Urban Winery to sample their excellent Chardonnay and learn about the unique 'Golden Egg' wine making process. This winery is housed in the National Tobacco Building, famous for its distinctive Art Deco style and a favourite photo stop for visitors to the region. At the completion of your winery experience you will be transferred back to the port.
